چکیده

Several industrial and fundamental studies focus on the consolidation of granular materials as this covers many technological fields. When a material is shaken, it densifies. The energy needed to compact or decompact powder column great interest in handling, filling transport operations. This work dynamic behaviour four materials–wheat flour, sericite, microcrystalline cellulose glass beads–when submitted vertical vibration using particle damper. effect wave was studied by varying two dimensionless parameters: relative acceleration, Γ frequency, Ω including relaxation time between periods. Our results show that despite cohesiveness samples, their compaction dynamics occurs at least two-compaction steps succession stretched exponentials can model, denoted herein generalised KWW model. Also absence periods leads fluidisation during first vibration. Fluidisation phenomena–the convective movement, jets, bubbling slugging–appear enhance reorganisation giving rise higher packing fractions depending nature grains operational conditions. A classification observed behaviours proposed related kinetics.

Three-dimensional Modelling of Industrial Granular Flows

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is attracting increasing interest for the simulation of industrial granular flows. While the majority of previous DEM modelling has considered two-dimensional flows, we present here a series of three-dimensional simulations for a number of important industrial applications. The charge motion in a 5 m diameter ball mill and in a Hicom nutating mill, discharge fr...

Developments in micromechanical modelling of granular materials

We are honouring the memory of Ioannis Vardoulakis through this special issue of Granular Matter, which is devoted to developments in micromechanical modelling of granular materials. Ioannis Vardoulakis will be forever remembered as an innovative experimentalist, a brilliantmechanician, an enthusiastic scientist, a devoted teacher, and above all an exceptional human being. The impression he mad...

Effects of horizontal vibration on hopper flows of granular materials

This study experimentally examines the flow of glass spheres in a wedgeshaped hopper that is vibrated horizontally. When the hopper is discharged without vibration, discharge occurs as a hnnel flow, with the material exiting the central region of the hopper and stagnant material along the sides. With vibration, the discharge of the material occurs in reverse, with the material along the sides e...

Stability of Granular Materials under Vertical Vibrations

The influence of periodic vibrations on the granular flow of materials is of great interests to scientists and engineers due to both theoretical and practical reasons. In this paper, the stability of a vertically vibrated granular layer is examined by linear stability analysis. This includes two major steps, firstly, the base state at various values of mass holdup (Mt) and energy input (Qt) is ...

Failure and strengthening of granular slopes under horizontal vibration.

We present experimental measurements of a granular slope under horizontal vibration. We use optical particle tracking to measure the motion of surface beads as the slope fails. We find that for all but the largest inclination angles, initial bead motion leads to strengthening rather than an avalanche. The initial motion of the beads is usually intermittent and evolves differently for different ...
